Dr Chew Min Hoe graduated from National University of Singapore with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 2001, and later with his Master of Medicine in Surgery in 2006. In 2010, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He went to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney in 2011 to 2012 for his fellowship, where he subspecialised in colorectal surgery. In 2020 Dr Chew was awarded the Public Administration Medal.
Dr Chew has specialist experience in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancers, as well as performing complex pelvic surgeries in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancers. He also works in multidisciplinary teams and performs pelvic surgery for advanced gynaecological and urological cancers.
Dr. Chew has a strong leadership background, having served as the Head of the Department of Surgery and Division Chairman of Surgery at Sengkang General Hospital. Additionally, he was an Adjunct Associate Professor at both the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and Duke-NUS Medical School.
He remains actively involved in professional organizations, including the Council of Surgeons, and was the President of the Singapore Colorectal Society from 2022 to 2023.
Dr Chew was part of a whole of nation effort combating the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. As the entire medical community performed defined roles to combat the outbreak, Dr Chew, together with his surgical teams, nurses and allied health staff, were deployed to the dormitories to perform swab and serology operations.
This was indeed a unique and unforgettable experience, from which many valuable lessons were learnt. Despite working in difficult conditions in PPE with the high heat and humidity, with high fears and anxiety of the disease behaviour, Dr Chew was privileged to lead and be part of many committed and resilient individuals who willingly went over and beyond the call of duty.
With experience garnered from the SARS outbreak, lessons acquired during the initial COVID-19 outbreak were also quickly written up and published to provide scientific evidence for the global community. These include safe surgical practices in the operating theatre, disease behaviours in surgical patients, as well as how our staff cope with the mental burnouts during the pandemic.
Dr Chew accepts referrals for management of colorectal cancers, benign conditions such as haemorrhoids, fistula in ano. He also sees patients who require diagnostic colonoscopy and gastroscopy for colorectal cancer and stomach cancer prevention.
